Was unused when bought in 1978 so very clean example and probably woven in late 1960's early 1970's. The Ulos Ragi Hidup (also known as ragidup or pinunchan) is one of the most important of Batak textiles and general worn over the shoulder at important ceremonies. Can also be used as a head cloth.
This example woven in five section and sewn together lengthwise. The single center panel is comprised of three joined sections, an ikat center with suplimental warp designs with a purple ground and two white, black and red ends decorated with fine suplimenatry weft patterns, one with male symbolism and one with female. The side panels are generally a solid colour (in this case black) within decorative ikat borders.A narrow ikat strip binds the cloth and holds the twisted warp fringes.
