This Tampan in blue dyes is a geometric representation of a ship. Tampan were exchanged between Kroe families to consecrate ritual occasions (birth, circumcism, marriage, death etc). The horizontal mirror symmetry is created so that when the cloth is placed over an object as a cover, folded over along the horizontal axis, the picture appears correctly oriented on both sides.
Supplimentary weft on plain hand spun cotton weave; natural dyes.
