The Ulos Ragi Hidup (also known as ragidup or pinunchan) is one of the most important of Batak textiles and general worn over the shoulder at important ceremonies. Can also be used as a head cloth.
This example woven in five main section and hand stitched together. The center panel is comprised of three joined sections, an ikat center with suplimental warp designs pn a deep red or maroon ground and two white, black and red ends decorated with fine suplimenatry weft patterns, one with male symbolism and one with female. The side panels are generally a solid colour (in this case maroon) within decorative ikat borders.
