| Notes: | Savu is a small island just to the west of Timor. This cloth is a hi'i wo hepi, the ceremonial shawl or selandang for men of the Hubi Iki social group. The pattern is dominated by wohapi, an open-ended lozenge with hooks on both ends and hi’I wo tallu, strings of flowers. Its hand spun yarns and natural vegetable dyes and its excellent weaving suggests an older cloth. The cloth also carries well twisted fringes. For a similar example see: www.ikat.us/ikat_143.php . |
